Zagreb

The city of Zagreb is the largest city in Croatia, as well as the capital city. It is located in the northwest of the country, along the Sava river, at the southern slopes of the Medvednica mountain. In the looks of history and politics, it is situated between East and West, illustrating both the continental and Mediterranean spirit of the population. During time, as a result of favourable location, it has become a crossing point for international communication.

The estimated population of the city in the year of 2018. was over 800 thousand people. Counting in the Zagreb urban agglomeration, number rises to about 1.1 milion, approximately a quarter of the total population of Croatia. In recent years people from different parts of country have migrated to the capital city, considering it has all the features of a modern european city. The flow of tourists has even overpassed the number of Zagreb’s inhabitants in last couple of years, proving that Zagreb has a lot to offer.

Zagreb’s architecture may remind you of some other european centers like Prague, Vienna or Budapest. You can devote a whole day exploring the medieval old city, where, among the charming old buildings, you may also notice some architectural heritage of the Socialist and Soviet era of Zagreb. The façades of Zagreb’s buildings reflect the flow of history, while its streets and squares witness the fusion of  many cultures that have shaped the identity of Zagreb. The historical part of the city to the north of the main square is composed Gornji Grad and Kaptol, a medieval urban complex of churches, palaces, museums, galleries and goverment buildings. The historic district can be reached on foot, starting from Jelačić Square, the main centre of Zagreb. The very evidence of 19th century urban planning is provided by the so-called Green Horseshoe. This line of eight green squares created by croatian architect and urbanist M.Lenuci, serves as the axis of the Lower Town. One of the most popular parks is called Zrinjevac, known for its row of plane trees brought in from Italy, fountains, music pavilion which take us back to that time of the past. Nearby place nestles another green oasis, the Botanical Gardens, containing one of the most splendid plant collections in Europe, with over 10 thousand varieties. Along with over 30 museums, 30 theatre venues, large number of galleries, music, dance and street festivals, Zagreb is reffered to as a city of art.

The best thing to do when you first arrive, is to feel friendly athmosphere and explore it's rich history. You should taste the delicious dishes of local cuisine in one of the authentic places which are scattered all over the city. Zagreb is considered as a very vibrant city whose doors are always open, so you can find a variety of authentic bars and clubs that are open all night long. At the very moment warmer weather starts to arrive and the sun appears in the sky, restaurants, caffees and terraces open for custom. Streets become promenades, places to get a sip of coffee, relax or have a business meeting. A combination of Mediterranean cordiality and northern business sense make any visitor feel welcome. Lounging in cafés has been a long tradition in this city, with seeing people enjoying their time from morning to the evening. Zagreb is a city that warmly invites all those who wish to get to know it, and a city that will surely fulfill your expectations!
